Tips for Restoring Your Patio Furniture

Collection of restored teak patio chairs Summer is a wonderful time to lounge in the backyard: The sun is out, birds are chirping, and there is plenty of daylight left to enjoy after work. To get the most of your leisure time, you need clean and comfortable patio furniture. Performing periodic cleaning and maintenance throughout the year ensures your patio furniture is always ready for you when the weather’s nice.

General Cleaning Tips

Before you start wiping down your furniture, read the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you do not damage it with any harmful cleaning products. Once you have familiarized yourself with the do’s and don’ts, you can go ahead with the light cleaning process.

Taking Care of Wood Furniture

Wooden patio furniture is attractive and durable when properly cared for. To make your furniture presentable for your kid’s birthday party or a summer barbecues, we recommend a few techniques to help restore your patio furniture. For light cleaning, sweep the furniture with a soft-bristle brush that will not scratch the finish. Then, try cleaning with Murphy’s Oil Soap, following the instructions on the bottle, to clean the surface. Dry it off with a clean cloth.

Deeper cleaning is best done by completely refinishing the patio set to remove weather damaged finishes and any mold lurking underneath. However, you may try lightly sanding the problem areas to remove the weathered top layer of wood. If possible, apply the same finish that was used on the piece originally.

Taking Care of Fabric

While outdoor fabrics are generally designed to withstand heat, moisture, and stains, they still require a wash every now and then. To keep pillowcases and seat cushion covers clean, machine wash them in cold water with bleach-free laundry soap. If you would rather hand wash your cushions and covers instead, swoosh them around in lukewarm water with a 1/4 cup of gentle liquid soap. Air drying will keep them from shrinking. Use a soft-bristle brush to dissolve any tough stains during the washing process.
